How to choose the dimensions of a 6m3 truck to transport a bed during a rental

A truck labeled 6 m³ shows a volume of the box, not a shape. To determine if a bed fits, you need to think in…

A truck labeled 6 m³ displays a cargo volume, not a shape. To determine if a bed fits, one must consider the interior length, width, and height, then compare them to the exact dimensions of the bed base, mattress, and frame. Volume alone does not indicate the feasibility of loading.

Usable length of the 6m³ truck: the measurement that determines if the bed fits

Most vans marketed under the 6 m³ label belong to the category of compact vans. Their cargo volume ranges from 5 to 7 m³ depending on the models, but it is the interior usable length that decides: a double bed base measures about 190 to 200 cm, and the loading length varies from one vehicle to another.

The Foton Cavan C1, presented at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, boasts 6.6 m³ with a usable length of 2.80 m. Its C1 Plus version reaches 3.10 m. With almost equal volume, the difference of 30 cm changes everything for a long bed base. A Peugeot Expert 6 m³ available for rent mentions an interior height of 1.90 m, without specifying the length or width. This ambiguity is common, and it poses a real problem.

Before booking, you need to know the dimensions of a 6m³ rental truck for the exact model offered by the agency. Ask the rental company for three values: interior length at the floor, width between wheel arches, and height under the ceiling. Without this data, there is a risk of ending up with a bed base that doesn’t even fit through the rear door.

Bed dimensions and opening size: two distinct checks

A bed consists of separate components: mattress, bed base (or slats), frame, headboard. Each piece has its own dimensions. A 140 x 190 cm mattress, folded or rolled, fits in most compact vans. The rigid bed base, however, does not fold.

Passing through the rear opening

The interior volume of the cargo area can accommodate the bed base once inside, but the rear opening is often narrower than the interior space. The wheel arches reduce the width at the floor, and the loading threshold imposes an insertion angle. A 140 cm wide bed base can get stuck on an opening of 130 cm between the pillars.

The sliding side door, when available, sometimes offers a more suitable access to slide a mattress flat. Check its dimensions with the rental company.

Single bed or double bed: the critical threshold

A single bed (90 x 190 cm) fits easily in almost all 6 m³ vans. The bed base fits in length, and its width leaves room to secure boxes on the sides. For a double bed (140 x 190 cm or 160 x 200 cm), the situation becomes more complicated. The frame of a 160 cm bed often exceeds the usable width between wheel arches, which is around 120 to 140 cm depending on the models.

A queen-size bed (160 x 200 cm) does not fit in all 6 m³ vans. If the frame cannot be disassembled, you need to consider a larger vehicle or check that the specific model from the rental company offers sufficient width.

Payload and securing: what the volume does not show

The weight of a bed alone (bed base, mattress, frame) remains moderate. The trap comes from the accumulation: vehicle occupants, boxes, protective blankets, straps. The payload refers to the maximum weight the vehicle can carry, including occupants. It varies from one model to another, and rental listings do not always mention it.

Ask the rental company for this figure. Exceeding the payload puts your responsibility at risk in case of inspection or accident, even if the cargo area is not fully loaded.

Protecting the mattress during transport

A mattress placed directly on the van floor gets dirty and can absorb residual moisture. A transport cover or plastic wrap is sufficient. Secure it against a side wall, standing if the interior height allows (a 20 cm thick mattress easily stands on its edge in a van that is 1.90 m high).

  • Strap the bed base to the tie-down points integrated into the cargo area to prevent any slipping during braking.
  • Place the heaviest boxes on the floor, against the partition between the cabin and cargo area, to stabilize the center of gravity.
  • Keep the mattress last on the pile: it absorbs shocks and is less likely to be crushed by a rigid piece of furniture.

Bed protruding from the 6m³ truck: what the regulations say

If the bed base or frame protrudes from the rear of the van, loading signage is mandatory (reflective device or red flag) as soon as the overhang exceeds one meter.

Driving with an open trunk and a bed base partially sticking out remains technically possible within the allowed limits, but the load must be securely fastened. In practice, a protruding bed base undergoes road vibrations and may deteriorate. This last resort solution does not replace the choice of a vehicle with the right dimensions from the start.

Checklist before booking a van to transport a bed

  • Measure each component of the bed separately (frame, bed base, mattress, headboard) and note length, width, thickness.
  • Contact the rental company to obtain the three interior dimensions of the cargo area and the dimensions of the rear opening of the exact model available.
  • Check the vehicle’s payload and estimate the total weight on board (bed, boxes, passengers, securing equipment).
  • Prepare covers, straps, and protective blankets before the loading day.
  • If the bed is a 160 x 200 cm with a non-disassemblable frame, consider a vehicle larger than 6 m³ right away.

The choice of the right van depends on three interior dimensions, not on a volume figure. Comparing the usable length of the van to the length of the bed base remains the most reliable reflex to avoid an unpleasant surprise on loading day.
